Scott Julsen Band - CO Local Band

Scott Julsen Band

I have trouble getting in touch with the local music scene here in the Denver area.  I’m not sure why exactly, but I’m very intrigued by it and I love a good local rock band as much as the other guy.  By chance, I came across the Scott Julsen Band last weekend and I was very impressed!

I went to Pink E’s in Westminster to see a band called Burning Abigail as a member is in my wife’s book club.  Julsen and the boys played first and rocked the scarce crowd!

(FYI, I’m at a complete loss as to how a pool hall with live music is pretty much empty on a Friday night!  Seriously, you had your pick of the tables there, and other than friends and family of the bands, there were maybe 10 people in the joint.  And it was ladies night – no cover for the girlies!  Y’all don’t know what yer missin’ here!)

The band features two guitarists/singers in Scott and Ryan Rister.  Both have great voices and Ryan is an incredible lead guitarist.  Brad Craig is the bassist, and you’ll find Dale Williams behind the kit.

There is a heavy Phish influence here, which could be one of my reasons for liking these guys.  I’m not a total Phish head, and I don’t go goofy over jam bands, but these guys were a lot of fun and had a very professional knack of putting their sound on everything they played.

About half of the tunes were originals, and the others were covers.  The originals mixed brilliantly with jam band versions of KC & the Sunshine Band’s “Get Down Tonight” and Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice.”  They also nailed a little U2 and even Jesu Jones!  These guys are thoroughly entertaining and put on a great show.  I just may become somewhat of a groupie!

Check their website for future gigs, and make sure you get out and see them.  Oh, and keep your local radio tuned to the Mountain and Area 93.3 as they just may pop up there every now and again!
